Buffalo to New York

topic posted Fri, April 1, 2005 - 8:00 AM by  Dream
Hi everyone :) Ive been reading these posts for a few months now. Ive noticed there are transplants to NYC so can I have some advice? My partner and I are looking to relocate to New York but Im not sure where to live. I have friends in Washington Heights but thats kind of a hike. I hear good things about Brooklyn but Ive never been there. I was hoping for something hip with access to some good art. I was told DUMBO is too expensive. What about Williamsburgh? Thanks for anytime you can give.

Brooklyn, for me, is the place to be.

It all depends, of course, on what you consider "hip" and "good art". that being said, for central casting hipster types, unknown art stars and their hangers-on look to Williamsburgh. It's not the most aesthetically charming neighborhood, but it's full of bars, galleries, party spaces and expensive thrift stores.

I don't know Washington Heights that well, but yeah, it's way up there. The A train is pretty reliable though and friends of mine love it.

Other areas of Brooklyn that you might want to consider are Fort Greene, Clinton Hill and North Park Slope/Prospect Heights. In Queens, i like Astoria and Long Island City.

If you have any specific questions, feel free to send me a message.

Seriously, I may be a little biased but I LOVE bklyn!!! Close enough to the city, but far enough too, still has that neighborhood feel that I'm used to from areas like Elmwood.

I call home Prospect Heights (cheaper than Park Slope, not quite as gentrified), close to the Park (which I'm partial to over Central, more accessible, kinda like Deleware Park) also, lots of cool peeps.

But Clinton Hill near Pratt and Ft Green near B-burg and lots of Polish people, a little like Buffalo are good too.
