Buffalo or Ithaca?

topic posted Tue, August 16, 2005 - 11:05 AM by  K.elly
(I posted a slight edit of this message in an ithaca group first so please excuse me if it reads as though it should only pertain to ithaca- Im trying to decide which area of NY to move to... maybe you all can help a bit?)

I am moving to either buffalo or ithaca this fall... will be buying my own place there so this is somewhat a long term thing... every time I go to ithaca I get goosebumps and fall in love all over again! what an AMAZING PLACE but I really love the arts scene around elmwood in buffalo!!! have any of you travelled from ithaca (or buffalo) to toronto by car and found it to be an easy drive? I know it is about 5 or so hours from ithaca (maybe a bit more) and 2 from buffalo but Ill have to do it at least once a month if I live in ithaca... if I live in buffalo Ill be going to toronto once a week... the question is... if you had the choice and the chance would you rather live in buffalo or ithaca? AND if it is Buffalo I have some houses that I am going to look at which are mostly in the deleware district off of elmwood - one is on hodge ave and one is on (1456) deleware ave... others I have seen are to the west of elmwood and also directly NE of deleware park... anyone have any ideas on getting a house in a good place downtown near elmwood?

I apologize for the rush of this message... Im pretty much making up my mind within the next week or so and I have to be sure of it... things that matter to me are:

. a good community arts scene
. a great and diverse music scene
. good performance and gallery spaces
. location central to buffalo rochester syracuse and of course toronto
. PEACE of mind! hehe, and very liberal, open minded peoples
. open to electronic/experimental music
. ENERGY, CHI, PRANA
. art art and more art, i need a place that will inspire me to be at my most creative

etc etc etc...

I love snow and the lakes... I also LOVE the gorges around ithaca and the waterfalls... haha, I guess if i go to see niagara Ill get a good dose of water for a bit...

what is the distance from Ithaca to Buffalo if any of you know? (I have looked online at maps etc and travelled in the area but not straight from ithaca to buffalo ... the maps and driving directions online cant be too trusted on driving time - or the condition of the roads in winter etc...)

any thoughts would be greatly appreciated... :D

THANKS VERY MUCH IN ADVANCE!

It has been so long since I lived in Buffalo, I could not give advice on where to live, since the neighborhoods may have changed. I would live in Buffalo, I loved it there. The drive to Toronto was not to bad, especially if you can go there other than during the rush hour. Just remember you will need your passport to travel back and forth next year.

thanks! yea I hope to get some neighborhood tips too- we want to move downtown near elmwood in the del. district... as close to that coffee shop on the corner of elmwood and bidwell as we can get but in a decent residential street... I think we can do it!

so awful, we thought we had sold my fiances house and all was going really really good but we found out the potential buyer faked his soc security number somehow and was approved for lending but isnt even a US citizen... bummer... it was close to settlement and we really wanted this to go through... as soon as we sell here we are moving AWAY far far AWAY from DC etc! toooooo busy rush rush down here... (and we freakin NEEEED snow... not the crap we get here in the winter)

        ok, thanks!!!

Ummmm, well, Ithaca is a thriving college town with a healthy downtown, lots and lots of art and culture, alternative and otherwise, and lots and lots to do.
Ithaca is good if you like strong culture, strong counterculture and a general intellectual aura.

Buffalo is a lot closer to Toronto, but part of its charm is its vaguely post-apocalyptic feel. Having said that, it does have a surprisingly good visual arts and an excellent poetry scene. People rarely want to move there from elsewhere though, unless they have employment--mainly at one of the zillion very good colleges. Buffalo is good if you like the plucky but gritty former steeltown feel.

thanks so so much! your advice will continue to mean a lot to me and Jared (the fiance :D)... I must admit I love both of these areas for some of the same and some very different reasons... Buffalo reminds a lot of Baltimore about ten years ago - it seems as though the artistic community there is really pushing for revival! that happened in a big way in baltimore and it really did help though that city continues to be plagued with massive shootings and violence - I once saw a guy get shot almost point blank in the middle of a riot that I thought was some sort of weird block party - that was no party and thats when I decided to move home to frederick md...

anyway, yea buffalo is an old industrial town of the east - I find those cities fascinating in ways and they can make you really cherish nature and the balance of out of city living... though in the city you can THRIVE! feed off of the energy there! I felt a good dose of ithaca openess and liberalism in buffalo!!! (or atleast the sections I visited and the people there... a great art gallery and tea room on elmwood... great restaurants... great things in artvoice all the time... soundlab! yea! being a musician that gets me excited!)

anyway, yea I hope the posts keep rolling in on this issue... I am torn because I feel the energy in the natural surroundings of Ithaca would benefit me sooo much but I am suppose to train with Ritesh Das of toronto on tabla (my main focus in music) so thats why I need to travel into toronto so often... I may even make it into the toronto tabla ensemble if I dedicate to this fully! In ithaca Im not sure I could dedicate fully but I sure could use some healing from the earth there!!! oh how I wish I could buy two houses - a retreat in Ithaca and a house with my main studios in buffalo... DREAM ON RIGHT... yea.

I also run a record label and as a musician I must say... yea, it would be dreamy to meet the likes of Ms. Difranco up there and possibly do some collaborations... the sky is the limit right?

right now Im laying low and preparing for some art sales here in MD until we move... might even be releasing a few CDs before then... blah blah blah... if you like experimental or atmospheric music please dont be shy to ask me what my label is all about!

hey , if you made it this far in reading - thanks so much! this is long now so I should leave it as so for this moment!

              PEACE,
K.elly (a talkative one who always gets the question - 'are you from canada?' 'you have that weird upstate ny or canadian accent going, where are you from?' , lol, its meant to be I guess)

PS- SHANNON- I really like that main photo you have up!!! very neat!

Yes, one of the advantages to being in Buffalo for you would probably be the commute to Toronto..it is only about a 2 hour drive...

one other word of caution, about Buffalo neighborhoods, I have lived in most of the areas of buffalo for most of my life (elmwood ave, delaware, University heights, West side, Amherst, West Seneca, and Lancaster...)

not sure what type of environment you are looking for, or what price range you are wanting to stay within. AVOID at all costs anyhitng around Bailey ave, west side, east side, these are high crime and impoverished areas...

Elmwood ave is a cool place to live, BUT don't even think about sleeping, it is college town, frat houses on every block...there is also no place to park unless you have a driveway of your own....in the winter parking is not accessible at all, quite an inconvenience...
there is also a MAJOR amount of damage from the party goers...they break signs, sleep in your back yard, throw their garbage everywhere...they would go around every garbage night and dump everyones cans into the street, walking across our cars and setting off alarms..(causing a huge dent in my friends new grand am, and numerous scratches)

lived on Hertel ave for a bit, it wasn't too bad, but again, impoverished neighborhood, lots of crime...people getting mugged in broad daylight, stores getting broken into, lots of drug trafficking also...I cannot say I am sad to be away from there...but if you had to live in the city, I would choose this neighborhood over all, look into north buffalo or parkside area for this...it is a very italian american community....

Allentown, yes, very artsy, but, again, you have to be careful, very high crime rate, tons of homeless & panhandlers, and the area closes down when the sun sets, you will only find restaurants open...high drug traffic area also, same with the west and east side..

east side/bailey ave, University heights...WORST neighborhood around...drive by shootings, drugs, prostitution, crime galore....avoid it at all possible costs...although there may be a nice house here and there, it is not worth it, lived there, hated it...we heard about people from school getting jumped/raped/killed/shot at/stabbed or their houses being broken into constantly...

My suggestion...you can move to the suburbs (snuburbs as my 11 yr old calls them) and drive into the city for your social/work scene... if you are going to invest in a home, you should be happy there....

cheektowaga has VERY reasonable real estate, and it is NICE...you want to avoid the pine ridge nieghborhood though, again, bordering on the east side...

if you are fortunate to find a good deal as we did here in Amherst (we are in Williamsville) that is the BEST neighborhood I think...email me for my real estate agents #, he also works out of rochester so he can direct you well....

all of the suburbs are a quick drive into the city of buffalo(then onto canada) by the kensington expressway and our thruway system....Amherst is very close to Canada...and I drive to Rochester in less than an hour, syracuse about 3 hrs...

I do not know about Ithaca, never lived there, only visited, yes, it is nice...I can only say what I know about Buffalo and it's surrounding areas...
every community has its own art scene, and depending on how much peace of mind you want...if it were just for the arts, I would move into Allentown...but again, it is a short drive into all the communities...you are better off spending your money on your peace of mind & safety and just commute like I do...

I have lived in Buffalo for most of my life. I used to live right next to the city border in West Seneca (A neat town) off of Seneca Street. I now live in North Tonawanda (In Niagara County) about 45 minutes to an hour away from Buffalo via the bus.

I think you would really benefit from choosing the Buffalo area. There is more to do here than in Ithaca. (Just because there are more people here.) What you do really depends on your personality. I can tell you though that you're better off living in a town right outside of Buffalo then in the city itself.

In a border town you get most of the benefits of living in the city but you don't have the high cost. Taxes are lower, better services, less insurance, etc. You also get better schools for your kids (if you have any.) YOu also are a stone's throw away from events both in the suburbs and in the city. How can you go wrong?

thanks so much for the advice all!

yes, we have decided on Buffalo! WOOHOOO! after a nice week long visit which made it our third to the area... we looked at houses and placed a bid on a nice house on Berryman in Snyder/Amherst... The street seems nice and quiet and it is close enough to the city that I can bike to the park and the places i really like on elmwood etc... for anything else it is so easy to drive there as compared to DC/Baltimore/Northern VA area!!! I have a few people in mind musically that I want to attempt to contact and try to connect with creatively and I feel like the area will be a good inspiation zone for my work... one thing I noticed while being there is that almost everyone on the street says hello to you!!! THATS AMAZING! Down here they just snarl or pretend they arent walking past anyone... it will be so so good to get moved in up there and away from the hustle that is surrounding this area!

sooo, yea, thanks for all of your advice!!! soon I will be a fellow Buffalonian and proud to say so!!!

      :D

      PEACE,
      K.elly
